At least 743 workers of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) have been infected with the coronavirus. Among the victims are some priests of Venkateswara temple in Tirumala. Besides, three people have died since June 11.
Anil Kumar, executive officer of the temple authorities, said on Sunday that more than 700 workers had been affected by the corona but 402 had already recovered. 338 people are undergoing treatment at various corona centers in Tirupati.
The top official of the temple authorities said that the Venkateswara temple was closed for two and a half months due to the lockdown. Then the temple has been opened for Darshan since last 11th June. Although many have claimed on social media, the board has decided to open a temple for the benefactors with the aim of raising funds.
However, the executive officer of the temple authorities dismissed that allegation. He said the decision to open the temple was taken at the request of devotees and benefactors. He also claimed that all safety rules are being followed.
