Fake TRP Scam : Mumbai police have been assured that the police have already summoned Arnab Goswami, the staff of Republic TV. None of them were arrested.
Mumbai Police has agreed to send a summons to Arnab Goswami if he is named in the FIR in the fake TRP scam. And that advice was given by the Bombay High Court. A bench of Justice SS Shinde and Justice Makrand Karnik said that if the investigating officer in the TRP scam adds the name of the editor-in-chief of Republic TV as an accused, he should be summoned. The rest was done in the case of eight employees of the channel.
The Bombay High Court on Monday heard a petition filed by AGR Outlaw Media Pvt Ltd (the company that owns Republic TV). The AGR has sought dismissal of the FIR lodged in the fake TRP scam at Kandivili police station. At the same time, it was requested to hand over the investigation of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as it has ‘influence all over India’.
Harish Salve, a lawyer representing the AGR, claimed that the AGR and Republic TV were being investigated for ‘excuses’ and ‘disguise’. Sushant Singh Rajput and Palghar murders are being biased in the investigation to harass the Mumbai police on multiple issues.
However, the claim was dismissed by Mumbai Police lawyer Kapil Sibal. He said the TRP scam case had nothing to do with the Palghar incident. “We are investigating the issue of paying for TV rating fraud and raising money for commercial gain,” he said. At the same time, Sivbal said that Salve had applied for protection of Arnab Goswami, adding that there was an investigation at an early stage. The FIR for Arnab cannot be dismissed. Because his name is not in the FIR. Sibal also assured the plaintiffs that the police had already summoned the Republic TV staff. None of them were arrested.
In response to a question and answer, the judges said there was no need for an interim verdict. And since there is no name in the FIR, there is no question of giving protection to Arnab. At the same time, if Arnab’s name was added as an accused, the judges advised him to send a summons. Sibal agreed. Salve said if the Mumbai Police Crime Branch issues a summons, he will be ‘honored’ and will co-operate in the investigation.
The case is scheduled to be heard again on November 5. Besides, the division bench directed the police to submit various documents of the TRP scam investigation in a sealed envelope to the High Court. “We want to look into the case documents and see what progress has been made in the investigation,” the High Court said.
