Justice Mantha said the court accepted Shivaratan Kakrania’s plea and withdrew the contempt charge against him.
A lawyer came around the door of the jail with a screenshot on the computer. He has somehow managed to get an apology from the Calcutta High Court. Accused is Shivaratan Kakrania.
Due to the Corona situation, the trial is going on in the Calcutta High Court through a virtual hearing. Lawyer Shivaratan Kakrania posted a screenshot of such a hearing on social media. As soon as it came to the notice of the court, Justice Rajshekhar Mantha issued a contempt of court rule against the lawyer.
Taking a screenshot of the court proceedings is equivalent to taking a picture while sitting in the courtroom, the judge said. In a judgment on August 25, Justice Mantha wrote, ‘Shri Shivratan Kakrania has submitted an affidavit on August 19 and has unconditionally apologized for his actions. He said he deleted the post after being informed about the matter. He also said that his remarks in that post were completely unintentional.
Justice Mantha said the court accepted Shivaratan Kakrania’s plea and withdrew the contempt charge against him. However, he has been instructed to be careful in this regard in the future.
This is the first time a lawyer has done so since the virtual hearing began.
